The most common question every newly, wed Indian couple asked is "When are you planning a baby?" Most couples expect to get pregnant the very first month they start to try; this misconception raises concern when they fail.
For a pregnancy to occur the egg from the female and sperm from the male has to fertilize. In a female with regular menstrual cycle of 28-30 days an egg is released on the 14th- 16th day. This phase is called as ovulation.
Sperms are continuously produced in the testes of a man which are ejaculated in the vagina of the female at the time of intercourse. Sperms enter through the cervix and travel through the uterus into the fallopian tubes. There are millions of sperms released at the time of ejaculation, out of which only a single sperm fertilizes the egg to form an embryo. This embryo then travels through the fallopian tube and attached itself to the lining of the uterine cavity. This embryo then develops to form a baby over a period of nine months.
The medical definition of Infertility is defined as the failure to get pregnant after having unprotected sex for at least one year. This time span has now reduced to 6 months. Even though infertility is an important problem it is never as considered urgent which often results in couples seeking for treatment until their chances for pregnancy have already declined. Due to this the time that can be taken for proper treatment is lost.
